HealthQWest Readership & Professoriate
Dear Colleague
I am extending an invitation to you as a member of HealthQWest to join the HealthQWest Readership & Professoriate. The purpose of this is to provide a community in which we can share ideas and experiences, debate fundamental or topical issues and offer collective support and guidance as part of our own personal and professional development and that of others.
Compared to established academic disciplines, there is a relative scarcity of senior academic role models and mentors for the Nursing, Midwifery and the Allied Health professions. This constitutes a significant barrier to producing the new generation professoriate in the NMAHP.
Q: Are you interested in increasing the number of graduates who will enter the professoriate in these disciplines.
An academic career might comprise the following with a number of transition periods:
- From undergraduate to post graduate
- From post graduate to post doc
- From post doc to research fellow
- From research fellow to senior research fellow
- Senior research fellow to reader
- Reader to professor
- Professor to …..???????
You will no doubt have experienced some of these

Q: How might you or your line manager/departmental culture have improved things?
Q: What preparation/support could have assisted you in these transitions?

There appears to be many types of Professors at different institutions and internationally this includes a mix of academics (researchers) and professional managers (head of department).

The interdisciplinary nature of the HealthQWest Readership and Professoriate offers a rich mixture of experinces, knowledge and opinions. The collaborative approach of HealthQWest means that our members share in the creation and ownership of new ideas. We can test and improve our ideas in practice by working with people who can make change happen.
