2008 Research Student Conference
A key opportunity for our Research Students to meet each other, to showcase their work and to hear about the research being conducted by others is provided at our annual Research Student Conference. This year’s conference was held at Glasgow Caledonian University on 2nd September. A number of oral and poster presentations were presented by our research students. The standard of the presentations was high and the diversity in topic areas and methodologies provided much scope for discussion and debate.
Two invited speakers provided contemporary perspectives on the current climate in health service research. Dr Andrew Lyon from the International Futures Forum (an International Think Tank) and the Glasgow Centre for Population Health agreed to present the keynote address, which drew on the content of his publication, The Fifth Wave: Searching for Health in Scotland. Andrew, a very engaging speaker, enthused and inspired us all! Shona McDermott, the Education and Training Officer with the Glasgow Clinical Research Facility, provided a valuable insight into her role and that of the CRF.The day closed with a Research ‘Question Time’ Event. Inspired by the popular TV programme, research students were invited to put questions to our panel of experts. This amusing and informative event ‘topped off’ what was an excellent day. A quote from one of our research students sums up what we hope to achieve by running this annual event:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the day and it is really motivated me. Listening to others talk about their research and hearing that other people have faced and overcome the same problems that I am facing now was really helpful. Knowing that I am not alone is a big help!”
